Innovation Types

The drone technology depends on many technologies such as:

  • Aviation technology

  • Autonomies technology

  • Surveillance technology

  • Stealth technology (military)

  • Communication technology

  • Manufacturing technology

Commercial drone will still depend on the above technologies especially the manufacturing technology, which is quite mature however commercial drones will need to address safety, and privacy issues thus an incremental innovation will be required for example, developing crash and interception avoidance software.

This innovation will affect the process in which companies deliver products leading to a process innovation as companies will need to change product delivery processes and implement new training programs.

In addition to creating and developing necessary technologies to support the commercial use of drones in logistics, companies will need to think about the legal implication of their use. As this is a new use of this innovation, laws are not sophisticated enough to govern all aspects of it.  For example, the FAA has allowed citizens to use drones for personal purposes but not in a commercial way and it raised a case against an individual who used it commercially however the federal judge ruling that case dismissed it as the current existing law doesn’t prohibit such uses.

Using drones to deliver products raises many concerns such as what will happen if it got intercepted and the product was damaged or stolen, what if a drone clashed with a building or another drone, and what if the drone for some reason dropped the product on someone’s head? Who will bear the responsibility and how to compensate for it?

There are many questions regarding logistics, safety and privacy that need to be addressed fully before launching these drones into the sky. These technical and legal challenges keep logistics drones as a science fiction idea and not something that can be used in real life.
