Growth Strategy

It is a long journey to become a dominant design and drone is developing toward certain points. First of all, drones should be intelligent and self-managed thus it will make drones safer and will increase its efficiency. Secondly, costs will be reduced. The production costs nowadays are still too high to deploy a full range of drones projects. If drones become a new trend in logistics, the companies like Amazon or DHL will need to reduce drones' costs (including software, hardware and related service costs). Thirdly, the development of infrastructure is one of key factors to make drones indispensable. Drones are not just an unmanned flying machines, that are based on internet and IoT (Internet of Things), drones can interact with people. With well-developed infrastructure, fast internet connection and accurate sensors drones can be easily controlled by people and they can become irreplaceable tool in the future.

However, beyond drones itself, maybe the biggest obstacle of drone developing is human. In US, Federal Aviation Association (FAA) seems doesn’t want this technology be implemented in daily life so quick. In 2011, Pirker became the first person fined by the FAA for flying a drone without a license. Although with the following legal process FAA faced the problem of lacking law to rule drones, it still a problem for drones to getting prospered – the legal hurdles. In 2014, FAA is expected to propose rules for commercial drones which may mandate the drone operators need flying licenses and limit flying in daytime hours and flying height limitation. All these regulations make commercial drones cost more than before and decrease the value of Google, Amazon and DHL which developing drones for commercial use. More than regulations, people may not have their private space anymore due to drone’s mobility and camera on it and end with boycott the drones industry. Therefore, to make this emerging industry grow stable, the growth strategy should also consider the regulation developing and culture shaping.
